I believe this is a two in one illustration, space saving, reminding that there were two versions of the viola/Geigen, one plucked, one bowed, and also reminding of the relationships involved. Everyone alive then probably knew the implied too obvious to mention then meanings, correlations, relationships. The drawing is making it clear that viols are a type of lute that is bowed.
